Trail Overview
Upper FAA Road is a scenic 2.1-mile out-and-back spur trail that offers offroaders an engaging climb leading to a stunning 280-degree vista. This route is ideal for drivers in high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles or SxSs looking for a quick, moderately technical side trip featuring beautiful valleys and high plateau views. Starting with a brief, steep climb and immediate descent into a lush valley, the trail winds past a unique log-cabin-style horse corral nestled in a dense grove of trees. Deer and cattle are frequently spotted grazing along this lower section before the trail ascends toward the plateau.
With a technical rating of 4, the trail demands attentive driving to navigate a steep, loose hill climb and a challenging boulder-strewn rock garden near the top. Ranging between 6,911 and 7,101 feet in elevation, the route features 251 feet of cumulative elevation gain over its short distance. The primary surface is unpaved, transitioning from loose dirt on the climbs to rugged rock obstacles along the plateau. While cellular service is completely unavailable in the valley, visitors will find reliable three-bar LTE connectivity at the scenic overlook.
