Trail Overview
The Devil's Staircase is an exhilarating slickrock connector within Moab's Sand Flats Recreation Area, specifically tailored for experienced four-wheel-drive and SxS drivers looking to test their technical crawling skills. Formerly closed, this short but intense segment on the famous Hell's Revenge trail links the Tip-Over Challenge area back to the main trail leading toward the park exit. The adventure begins immediately at the drop-in, where drivers must carefully squeeze past a tight canyon wall on the driver's side that bears the scars of many less-fortunate rigs. Once down in the sandy canyon bottom, drivers face a choice between a milder bypass or tackling the steep, tiered rock ledges of the staircase itself.
Climbing the staircase demands precise tire placement and steady throttle control to negotiate two large, deep holes that threaten to tip vehicles. Off-camber positioning here carries high consequences, as a rollover could send a vehicle tumbling back down the steep rock face. Well-built four-wheel-drive vehicles with high clearance, robust skid plates, and lockers are highly recommended to safely complete this challenge. While short at just over one-third of a mile, this route sits at an elevation of roughly 4,600 feet and offers an unforgettable dose of classic Moab slickrock crawling with stunning views of the surrounding sandstone domes.
