Trail Overview

Serving as a highly specific backcountry access route, the Squaw Trail motorized extension is a very brief but purposefully rugged 0.25-mile transit designed exclusively to transport off-roaders directly to the main Squaw hiking trailhead. Despite its exceptionally short length, the vivid, deeply tracked red-sand path immediately immerses drivers into a classic, heavily wooded high-desert environment under brilliant blue skies. The sandy track playfully yet aggressively meanders through dense, tightly packed groves of mature, fragrant juniper trees and thick desert scrub. Because the designated corridor is extremely narrow and winding, explorers piloting midsize to full-size rigs will inevitably brush against the stiff, encroaching foliage, making cosmetic side-panel pinstriping an absolute, unavoidable guarantee. As the two-track rolls and curves across the landscape, it offers quick, scenic glimpses of the distant rugged plateaus before ultimately depositing vehicles at the deeply sandy clearing of the hiking trailhead, where the motorized journey officially ends.

Difficulty

The Squaw Trail motorized extension decisively earns a Level 3 Moderate technical rating, driven almost entirely by the remarkably deep, power-sapping red sand found congregating heavily along the track and specifically at the main trailhead parking area. To successfully negotiate this distinctly soft, shifting terrain without quickly sinking and getting hopelessly bogged down, a highly capable vehicle equipped with a true four-wheel-drive (4WD) system is absolutely mandatory. Furthermore, drivers must significantly lower their tire air pressures before attempting the route to ensure essential flotation and traction over the deep sandy ruts. Standard low-clearance AWD crossovers will struggle immensely and are highly likely to become stranded at the trailhead terminus.
