Trail Overview

Marked by a simple brown carsonite post indicating "3619," this incredibly rewarding 0.58-mile spur trail serves as a direct path to one of the most spectacular dispersed campsites in the entire region. The journey begins as a slightly rough, rocky dirt track that ascends steadily through a scattered evergreen pine forest. As you push forward, the dense trees begin to thin out, and the road opens up onto a sweeping, highly exposed dirt ridge. At the track's terminus, explorers are greeted by an amazing, premier campsite featuring a beautifully constructed, large stone fire ring perched right on the edge of the overlook. From this high vantage point, campers are treated to sweeping, unobstructed panoramic views overlooking Tropic Reservoir and the breathtaking red rock escarpments that define the distant horizon. Visitors should be prepared for the elements; due to the elevated exposure and sparse tree cover, this site is frequently buffeted by strong, persistent winds. Additionally, this is an active wildlife habitat, meaning all campers must be strictly bear-aware and properly secure all food and scented items.

Difficulty

Special Spot 33619 firmly earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating. The primary challenge of this short 0.58-mile route is navigating the embedded and loose rocks scattered along the initial climb. While the trail is entirely devoid of severe ledges, deep mud bogs, or technical off-camber threats, the bumpy and uneven nature of the track does require a vehicle with a decent amount of ground clearance to prevent undercarriage scrapes. A standard AWD crossover, stock SUV, or high-clearance 2WD truck can easily conquer this route with mindful tire placement, but low-clearance passenger sedans should avoid the rocky ascent.
