Trail Overview

This is a beautiful short loop in the Sinbad Valley that features petroglyphs and a natural arch. There is a tunnel under I-70 that is currently 9-10 feet high (as of March 2024), although it's off-camber, so that's the smaller measurement. The tunnel is full of sand, so the measurement could change depending on the sand depth. A SxS is easily able to fit through, but a full-size vehicle will need to check the height first. Once across the freeway, the track changes from graded dirt to mostly sandy two-track. There's nothing too challenging, but there are some off-camber sections for those on 4 wheels. There are petroglyphs on a few of the out-and-back trails and there is even a natural arch on the farthest western out-and-back. With lots of fuel and free time, you could really find some amazing sights back here. It's not long or super challenging, but well worth the trip if you have a little free time.

Difficulty

The north of the freeway section is sandy and requires passing under the road in a smaller culvert. Airing down is recommended.

Main east-west trail is fine. Pictograph sites are a must-see. Camping on the northern spurs are spotty. Massive recent washes make most of sites very difficult to get to. Dutchman arch on west end is very accessible for kids (and kids at heart) that like to climb around without being too high off the ground. I connected Fixit and Devil's Racetrack so I didn't cross under I-70 and can't speak to that. The other reviews are spot on with my experience from past trips though.

The eastern underpasses under I-70 are getting pretty washed out on the south ends. The southern one isn't bad for now coming from the south but one side is completely washed out, use caution if coming from the north. The north one has a roughly 18" lip with rocks stacked up against it and enough chunks in the concrete edge to show not everyone is getting over it without scraping. I was slightly amazed I was able to go over it without anything touching with my stock Land Cruiser suspension. If you skip the eastern underpass part of the loop, the southern road up to the western I-70 underpass is easily doable in a normal car. North of I-70 it's washed out and sandy in spots and would require at least some very careful route picking, maybe at least a Subaru or similar. Please note that especially the portion north of I-70 can change quickly after rain storms, the conditions may be very different by the time you visit!

The southern half of the road is wide and easy to drive. It rained a good bit the day before so there were a number of large puddles. Nothing that would stop a 4x4 but wouldn’t want to go with low clearance. Once we crossed the highway the northern section had a very different character. It was narrow throughout. Just wide enough for one vehicle. Passing would be difficult as the road cuts into the ground several feet. Coming back across the highway the crossing is a bit rough. There’s about an 18” drop that has rocks piled up to help negotiate it. I don’t have any lift on the truck and we scraped our skid plate a bit. If you’ve got 2-3 inches of lift you can probably make it. There were several sections off camber. The water on the road would make it difficult for motorcycles but I suspect 90% of the time it is dry and passable.

Great day on the trails. The East i70 underpass had a pretty big step up. The rock ramp helped, zero issues in our rigs. The West underpass will flat and easy to pass. Lots of cows roaming so be careful. A couple soft areas but we didn’t even have to air down or use 4hi. Great trip with the kids!

Most of the trail was perfectly fine. However, I’m in a stock 2004 Tundra SR5. The eastern tunnel(s) going under I-70 has a pretty large ledge. There are some small rocks built up as a ramp but they look quite precarious. The ramp descends in elevation if traveling north to south under the highway. We decided it would be best to turn around. Aside from this the rest of the trail was more than doable in our truck.
