Trail Overview
The main trail is 5.2 miles, but an additional up-and-back to Silver Dollar Mine is 1.5 miles. The trail features packed dirt, gravel, loose soil, and rocky outcrops. It's generally well-maintained but includes rough sections with deep ruts and embedded rocks, requiring 4WD and high-clearance vehicles. It's suitable for single-vehicle travel with some wider passing areas. Expect tight spots, especially on the road to Silver Dollar Mine, where vehicles like a Ford Raptor (74.3 inches wide) may brush against vegetation. Desert shrubs, juniper, and pine trees, as well as coyotes, small mammals, and birds, can be seen. You'll have panoramic views and see striking rock formations and varied vegetation. Silver Dollar Mine offers a glimpse into the region's "cool" mining history. Obstacles include rocky patches, loose gravel, deep ruts, and off-camber sections (15-20 degrees). There are steep inclines and declines and washed-out sections 3-4 miles in. Look for numerous dispersed camping spots nearby; hiking and photography opportunities abound. Expect hot, dry summers and cooler springs and falls. It's less accessible in winter or after heavy rains. T-Mobile service is at the beginning, end, and near Silver Dollar Mine. Ensure vehicles are well-prepared due to the trail's remoteness. The trail is lightly trafficked, ideal for quiet off-road experiences. Carry water and emergency supplies. Inform someone of your plans. Practice "Tread Lightly" principles. The trail is located near Eureka, Utah, an old mining town established in the 1870s due to rich silver deposits. The Silver Dollar Mine is a key historical site showcasing the region's mining heritage. The Prospector OHV Backway Complex offers scenic views, historical sites, and moderate off-road challenges, suitable for day trips or leisurely exploration. With plentiful dispersed camping nearby, it's an excellent choice for overlanding adventures.
Difficulty
This is rated as an intermediate trail due to its few challenging features that require adept driving skills and well-equipped vehicles. The trail presents deep ruts that demand careful navigation to prevent getting stuck or causing vehicle damage. Off-camber sections, with angles reaching 15-20 degrees, test the stability and handling of off-road vehicles. Additionally, the trail's tight passages often leave little room for maneuvering, making it difficult to back out in certain areas. It's a very beautiful location, but pay attention where it counts.
