Pink Cliffs - FS 30608

Trail Overview

Forest Service Road 30608 is a spectacularly scenic, high-elevation 1.04-mile route that climbs well above 9,300 feet to reach the magnificent heights of the Pink Cliffs. The journey begins on a striking, vibrant red dirt track that vividly contrasts with the surrounding lush, towering evergreen pines and beautiful white-barked aspens. As the trail ascends higher into the pristine backcountry, the surface begins to incorporate stretches of white rock and, during the spring months, features lingering patches of snow along the forested shoulders. Along the route, clear rustic wooden signage reliably points explorers toward the Pink Cliffs overlook. As you approach the absolute summit, the trail narrows significantly, becoming a very tight squeeze as it winds intimately through the dense high-altitude timber. At the trail's terminus, visitors are rewarded with a secluded, peaceful clearing that features an isolated metal picnic table situated near the dramatic cliffs--an ideal, quiet spot to relax, take in the vast regional views, and appreciate the rugged beauty of the high country.

Difficulty

FS 30608 confidently secures a Level 2 Easy technical rating. The primary physical considerations on this high-elevation climb are the persistent, undulating erosion ruts deeply pressed into the soft red dirt. While the track is essentially devoid of severe, vehicle-damaging ledges or extreme off-camber hazards under dry conditions, the path does become exceptionally narrow as it snakes through the dense pine trees near the summit. Drivers of full-size, wide vehicles will need to navigate carefully to avoid trail rash on their side panels. A standard AWD crossover, stock SUV, or high-clearance 2WD truck can easily and safely manage this beautifully scenic dirt climb.
