Trail Overview

This trail branches off of Greely Hill Flats and heads up the hill to Nutty Putty Cave. The trail starts off going across a short flat before starting up the hill, where it starts getting rocky. The trail will be relatively tame until around halfway, where you will pass by old mine tailings on the Northwest side of the trail, where the trail will head up a steeper hill before following the ridge to the major rock obstacle of the trail. This obstacle is wide and has many line options to traverse it, with the trail heading to the east after this obstacle. Once past this obstacle, the trail smooths out to the cave. This trail has no closure dates but may be impassable if the trail is wet or snow-covered, with this trail having a few spots that are dangerous in slick conditions.

Difficulty

This trail has one major obstacle made up of sharp rocks and medium-sized ledges that must be traversed. There are many different ways to traverse this obstacle, but there is no bypass for it.

History

Nutty Putty cave was sealed off back in 2009 after a tragic accident in which John Edward Jones got trapped within the cave and was unable to be rescued. After the incident, the cave was sealed off and is now his final resting place. There are a handful of different plaques placed at the entrance to the cave that further explain the history of the cave.
