Trail Overview

Nasty Flat Road stretches from McMillan Springs Campground on the north, alongside the western peak of the Henry Mountains. There are sparse pine and quaking aspen patches along the route. There are incredible views looking west over the cliffs and canyons of Capitol Reef National Park and the Escalante Plateau. This is a limited draw mule deer hunting area which can lead to finding larger buck deer. There is also a free-roaming bison herd that roams between the mountain range and west towards the east side of Capitol Reef.

Difficulty

There are several areas to pass along this route and some steep cuts along the mountainside. The roads can have large snow drifts when winter approaches and can be muddy and slick during inclement weather.

Came up from the East on Crescent Creek and South down Bull Creek Pass to west on Nasty Flat road and on to Notom road. The 2 rating seems right to me for that route. Nasty Flat trail is a shelf road that wraps around the south side of Henry Mountain mostly around 9,000 ft and has a few miles of East, South and West territorial views of southern Utah from the La Sal's to the Markagunt Plateau and everything in between, most of the way to McMillan Springs. Most of the way there's room for 2 vehicles to crowd by. A couple of spots with off-camber around 10 Deg on steep shelf that made my wife nervous, but didn't seem that bad to me. One other rig camping at McMillan Springs which is spread out among scattered Ponderosa Pine and has a couple of clean vault toilets. Easy trail down the western slope to the blacktop on Notom rd.
