Markagunt Plateau 2

Markagunt Plateau 2, also known as the Old Highway, is an ideal route for scenic cruisers and beginner offroaders looking to explore the beautiful forest terrain of southern Utah. Stretching approximately 2.8 miles through the Dixie National Forest, this trail features a gentle elevation gain of around 493 feet, starting at an elevation of 7,659 feet and peaking at 8,152 feet. The route consists primarily of unpaved dirt and gravel surfaces that are easily navigable by most high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs. Much of the trail winds through pine forests near the Markagunt High Plateau Scenic Byway, providing direct access to the wider Uinta Flat area and connecting to numerous other trails in the region. While the majority of the trail is rated as a beginner-friendly 2 out of 10, drivers should prepare for a short but distinct hill climb and descent on the eastern half of the route where the terrain becomes slightly more rugged. Primitive camping opportunities are abundant along the western side of the trail, offering excellent spots to set up camp under the trees. The trail is best run from late spring through fall when snow has cleared from the high-elevation plateau. Nearby points of interest include Cold Spring, and the route serves as a convenient connector between major forest roads, making it a great addition to a longer day of offroad exploration.
