Lower Last Chance Loop Road

Lower Last Chance Loop Road is an exceptional multi-use route for scenic tourers, overlanders, and beginner offroaders seeking to immerse themselves in the vast, rugged landscapes of the San Rafael Swell. Spanning approximately 52 miles, this expansive loop can be accessed from the north off Interstate 70 via State Route 10 or the Blue Road exit, as well as from the south near Capitol Reef National Park. The trail climbs from a minimum elevation of 5,425 feet to a maximum of 6,702 feet, offering magnificent, wide-open vistas of the eastern plains and the prominent Iron Red Buttes. Along the western horizon, the snow-covered peaks of the Wasatch Plateau dominate the skyline, providing a dramatic backdrop for the entire journey. Rated a 2 out of 10 for difficulty, this unpaved route is highly approachable for standard four-wheel-drive vehicles, high-clearance SUVs, and SxSs during dry conditions. However, the clay-based surface becomes incredibly slick and dangerous when wet, quickly turning into heavy mud that can trap even capable vehicles. Given its extremely remote nature and lack of cell service, drivers should avoid traveling solo during inclement weather and always carry extra supplies. While the road is open year-round, winter snows and summer monsoons can drastically alter trail conditions, requiring careful planning and a close eye on the local weather forecast.
