Trail Overview
Lost Spring Wash is a little-known and lightly traveled trail that follows a historic segment of the Old Spanish Trail along the edge of the San Rafael Swell. Because this canyon contains reliable springs, early travelers depended on the water source and marked their route with rock cairns as they crossed this remote country. Today, the trail offers a rewarding mix of history, scenery, and moderate 4x4 challenge. Expect numerous washout sections that require at least a stock high-clearance 4x4, along with a few steep descents where low range is highly recommended. The route transitions through several different landscapes, from broad wash bottoms that look like ancient river or lake beds to open desert lined with shrubs and sandstone walls. The trail zigzags through a rocky and picturesque canyon with optional obstacles for more adventurous drivers. Running the route south to north provides the most scenic views and the greatest challenge.
Difficulty
Best suited for stock high-clearance 4x4 vehicles with low range. Expect multiple washouts, uneven terrain, rocky sections, and a few steep descents where careful tire placement and controlled braking are important. The main route is manageable for capable stock rigs in dry conditions, while optional obstacles can increase the challenge. Skid plates and good all-terrain or mud-terrain tires are strongly recommended. Avoid the trail during or after rain, as washout sections can become much more difficult.
History
Lost Spring Wash follows part of the Old Spanish Trail, an important trade and travel route used by early settlers and traders crossing the Southwest. Reliable springs in the canyon made this area valuable for water, and travelers marked their way with rock cairns that guided future travelers through the rugged landscape.
