Long Hollow South - FS 31131

Trail Overview

FS 31131, also known as Long Hollow South, is a brief but incredibly scenic 0.94-mile journey that escorts explorers directly to the border of Bryce Canyon National Park. The trail officially begins near a brown Carsonite marker labeled "1131", immediately introducing drivers to a heavily rocky, bumpy, and unmaintained stretch of dirt. However, after this initial rough section, the path beautifully smooths out, transitioning into a tranquil red-dirt two-track that winds through the lush, grassy upper meadow of Long Hollow. Lined by towering, dense evergreen pines, this upper meadow provides numerous fantastic, flat clearings that serve as premier dispersed camping options. Because this lush forest is an active wildlife habitat, all campers and drivers must remain highly bear aware, ensuring that all food and scented items are securely stored. The drive continues peacefully under the forest canopy until it abruptly dead-ends at a visible barbed-wire fence line, securely marking the impassable boundary of the national park.

Long Hollow - FS 31131 earns a comfortable Level 2 Easy rating. The sole technical challenge of this route is located at the very beginning, where the track features a concentrated section of rough, loose, and embedded rocks. This distinctly bumpy start requires a vehicle with a decent amount of ground clearance to navigate without scraping the undercarriage. However, once past the initial rocky segment, the remainder of the trail becomes an exceptionally smooth, well-packed dirt two-track that is highly accessible and relaxing to drive. Standard AWD crossovers, stock SUVs, and high-clearance 2WD trucks will have absolutely no problem comfortably completing this short, scenic forest drive under standard dry conditions.
