Long Hollow - FS 31130

Trail Overview

Branching off into the beautiful surrounding wilderness, Long Hollow (Forest Service Road 31130) is a brief but highly scenic 0.71-mile dirt track that steadily climbs toward the boundary of Bryce Canyon National Park. The journey begins as a relatively tight, rocky two-track pathway that beautifully cuts through dense clusters of towering evergreen pines and vibrant, grassy forest clearings. As explorers navigate higher into the upper reaches of the picturesque Long Hollow meadow, they will discover numerous excellent, flat dispersed campsites offering profound privacy and fantastic shade. The vibrant red dirt trail provides an immersive woodland experience, but drivers of full-sized rigs must remain vigilant as they approach the trail's terminus. Just before the road officially dead-ends at the park boundary, an aggressive, severe washout completely compromises the track. This deeply eroded obstacle restricts any further travel exclusively to narrow dirt bikes (motos) and ATVs; all full-size trucks and SUVs must safely park or turn around before this final washed-out segment.

FS 31130 firmly earns an Easy Level 2 technical rating, predominantly due to its consistently rocky and bumpy dirt tread. Throughout the majority of the climb, the two-track surface features scattered loose cobble and embedded rocks that require a vehicle with adequate ground clearance, making standard AWD crossovers, stock SUVs, and high-clearance 2WD trucks perfectly suitable for the transit. However, the absolute hard stop for this Level 2 rating is the severe washout located just before the dead-end. This heavily eroded section features exposed tree roots and deep trenches that full-sized passenger vehicles simply cannot pass safely; only ATVs and motos possess the footprint required to continue beyond this point.
