Trail Overview

Hunts Lakes Loop (aka Hunts Lake) is a side trip off of Monroe Canyon Road (aka Old Sawmill Road). It's just over a mile, and at the end of FS# 40075 there are a couple of spurs that go out to each lake. You may find a sheepherder, his horses and dog, and a herd of sheep grazing in this beautiful area. If so, steer clear of the sheep, and take your time. The trail, in July, is an easy trail. You wind through aspen and pine tree groves, and there are some large rocks to navigate, but they're easy as long as you've got good ground clearance. The views of the surrounding mountains are spectacular. The entrance to the loop that is further south is steep and rocky. We entered from the northern entrance and took the steep rocky route as our exit. Either direction is fine. There isn't room to pass another car, but there are places to pull over and let someone by on most parts of the trail. This is a picturesque spot for a picnic or for overnight tent camping. Remember, to off-road in Utah you need to have the online education course certificate and an OHV sticker.
