Trail Overview
Gold Hill Pass Road is a scenic drive through the western Uinta Mountains, winding through historic logging areas, open mountain meadows, and beautiful pine forests. Along the route, you'll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding 12,000-foot peaks, making this an excellent trail for sightseeing and photography. The trail is generally easy and suitable for most 4WD vehicles in dry conditions. However, don't let the easy rating fool you—rain, snow, or muddy conditions can quickly make the road slick and significantly more challenging. The most difficult section is typically near the western trailhead by Whitney Reservoir, where rougher terrain and seasonal conditions can require extra caution. If you're traveling in the spring or late fall, bringing a chainsaw is highly recommended. Fallen trees are common during these seasons, especially after winter storms or early snowfall, and may block portions of the trail.
Difficulty
The trail does contain deeper ruts and washes from extreme summer and winter weather. Furthermore, there are steeper climbs in some areas and some rocks on the west side that can create some challenges.
