Trail Overview
East McKee is an unmaintained point-to-point dirt trail rated 2/10 in the Ashley National Forest. It is a single-lane dirt trail that runs generally parallel to and to the east of US 191. It is a varied surface, and at all times one lane wide. Variations in surface range from smooth dirt to heavily rutted. Some areas of mud are present, as are loose rock sections. At the southern end of the trail, if approaching from the north, is a respectable small hill with a loose dirt and rocky surface that requires 4WD. The trail generally follows a powerline through the area with clear areas on the east side and pine/aspen on the west.
History
Stringham cabin was originally built in 1926; it has been restored by the USFS to its original state. While you cannot go inside, you can peek inside to see the antique stove and sparse furnishings used by the family for eight years while sheepherding. Nearby is the sheep wagon where the children slept.
