Trail Overview

Dead Broke is a 1.2-mile point-to-point trail rated 7 of 10 in the Sand Mountain Open Road OHV Area. One of the newer trails on the mountain runs east to west across the central mountain, offering scenic views of the Sand Hollow State Park, Zion Range, and Pine Valley Mountain. As the trail progresses, he obstacles increase in difficulty. The unmarked trail starts on the connector trail just east of the Chain Reaction wash. The first half-mile of the trail consists of off-camber slick rock and moderate waterfalls before dropping into and crossing the Chain Reaction wash. Climbing out of the ash is a 300-yard steep slickrock climb that leads to a hard left turn up a wall on the passenger side to get out of the wash. There are a series of additional steep climbs, "V-notch" obstacles and off-camber turns as the trail crosses Triple 7s, Double Sammy, and Joint Effort before exiting onto the sand. As the trail exits, the sand stays to the left of the rock formations directly below and swings out to the plateau on the passenger side. The last obstacle is Baby Lionsback, a fun trapezoid obstacle that offers a blind climb up one side, cross the top, and a blind drop down the other side. Exit out to the dunes to end the trail. Several ob tackles along this trail are not short-wheelbase friendly. Skillful drivers may find success but should be prepared to winch up if necessary. This trail is technically challenging, with plenty of obstacles to keep you from boredom. This great warm-up trail exits right near the trailheads for Double Sammy (rated 7) or Joint Effort (rated 9). Cell phone service i available throughout the trail and the nearest services are located in Hurricane.

This trail is more difficult than what is being described as of the date of this posting. Dead Broke is not easier than Double Sammy. You will be subjected to more continuous off-camber paths and obstacles with a much smaller margin of error. Your chances of tipping/rolling is higher than what you would expect. You will experience multiple obstacles where one wheel is off the ground exceeding 2 feet. 35” sticky tires recommended, especially for sidewall grip. Some obstacles 4 seaters will struggle more, while other obstacles 2 seaters will struggle more. Unforgiving trail and the only way out is to finish.

This trail is marked for high clearance 4x4’s only but we’ve done it twice in our 98” wheelbase SxS and with large groups with everyone making it through with 0 issues, no tip overs, no winching, etc. this trail is slightly easier than 777’s or Papa Smurf although still a 7 rating so don’t take it lightly as it has some challenging obstacles! I feel that SxS’s should be added to the accessibility chart.
