Trail Overview

Buckskin Wash Road is an adventure. You can just drive the road and be done in a couple of hours, having seen some great sites including a magical view into the Grand Staircase Escalante area. This is an old oil exploration site with really interesting solidified drops all over the ground and views of cliffs, hoodoos, and the majesty of this Grand Staircase. There are many smaller/shorter adventures available along the way. There are petroglyph panels, a large indigenous granary and encampment area, Mollie's Nipple, a large working ranch that has been there for decades, and so much more. This is one of the favorite rides of those who live in the Kanab area, especially those who love history and the majesty that Mother Nature can produce through wind and water erosion. This trip can be combined with other trails for a longer full-day adventure.

Difficulty

This road is a tale of many different roads. The first few miles are generally a well-maintained gravel/sandy road with a couple of minor obstacles that can be traversed by most vehicles. Once you make the corner and head northeast, the road also becomes much more challenging for non-4WD vehicles. This section and the end are for true 4WD and high-clearance vehicles. This does not mean AWD. Only true 4WD vehicles should proceed. There are steep rocky sections, deeper sand, and larger rocks. The rocks have sharp edges and will easily cut a normal street tire. There are limited to no communications capabilities in this area, so if you get stuck or disabled, there is very limited traffic that uses this road.

Access Description

The trailhead is just beyond the entrance to the road. It is to the right directly at the top of the hill on Highway 89 west of the road approximately 0.25 miles. You can get back to the road from the trailhead by exiting to the west, down the hill, and then cross the road, being mindful of the high-speed traffic and limited views.
