Trail Overview

Brigham Plains Rd-BLM430 is a 12-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10. It can be accessed from the north end from Cottonwood Road and the south end from Coyote Valley Road. Brigham Plains Road is located on the south side of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The southern section follows the Coyote Wash. The wash is inviting and there may be an urge to ride the wash, but remember this is a stay-the-road area. Climbing out of Coyote Wash, the trail switchbacks up to the Kaiparowits Plateau. This area is called the Brigham Plains and offers scenic views. After crossing the plateau, there is a series of switchbacks descending the ridge back to Cottonwood Canyon Road. The area where the road is located is remote and completely undeveloped. There are no services anywhere along the route. There is no cell phone coverage along this route. The nearest immediate services will be located in Big Water with a larger selection in Kanab to the west or Page, Arizona, to the east.

Tight switchbacks for a Tundra. Lots of loose rock, single track with no passing areas or even to turn arounds for long stretches. Clearance fine with planning and moving some rock. Only saw dirt bike tracks. Did get stuck at a washout going out of the canyon.

Winding through Coyote Wash was muddy and slick. The ascent to the plateau was challenging, and there were some spots where washouts have left significant ledges to descend. Spotter and rock stacking needed.

Definitely 4-5 Jeep trail. Rock fall on the upper switchbacks has partially blocked the road. While not impassable, it is a bit challenging to get over.

I am a rookie off road driver in a full size truck so take that into consideration, but after doing a bunch of the 2/3 rated easy trails around Moab I was pretty comfortable trying this trail, I was wrong though! We started from the north end and the climb up was great until we hit the first obstacle near the top, by the time we encountered it we were committed. There were obstacles on steep grades and I slid on my skid plates a few times. I didn’t measure anything but i am confident some of the obstacles were over 12 inches. We made it with no damage or injury but I did not enjoy this one too much. Nice views and a great adventure to go home with though. If you are a novice like me… Don’t do it, just stay on cotton wood canyon road
