Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. At first glance, this sub half mile connector between the Morrison Knudsen Tunnels and Buckhorn Wash Overlook might seem too short or too easy to matter, but that would be a mistake. This trail plays a key role in linking two high interest destinations without forcing a longer backtrack to Green River Cutoff, saving both time and fuel while keeping your route efficient and flowing. The terrain includes a few slightly steeper sections with loose rock that require attention. Surrounded by desert vegetation and cacti, it’s important to stay on the trail and watch your footing when stopping. Its value isn’t in difficulty, it’s in strategic access, making it a worthwhile inclusion for anyone building a cohesive route through the Swell.

Difficulty

Despite a couple of short, slightly steeper sections with loose rock, this connector remains an easy trail overall. It is suitable for most high clearance 4x4 vehicles, with minimal technical challenge beyond basic throttle control and tire placement. The primary value of this route is connectivity rather than difficulty, making it a straightforward but important link between destinations.

History

The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
