Trail Overview

This trail runs up and over the Newfoundland Mountains, a remote mountain range in the middle of the Great Salt Lake Desert. It is the southernmost point to cross over the range since the southern tip of the mountain range is closed for the military. It can make a great spot to turn your trip to the Newfoundlands into a loop. Much of the trail is a reasonably easy dirt road; however, a few steep and narrow sections are near the top of the pass. On the eastern side of the pass, the trail briefly splits in two. We went with the northernmost route down, which this route follows (the other option is just to the south). This trail is fun if you are looking for a little more challenge and has excellent views overlooking the Salt Flats. This area is very remote with sparse cell service, so be prepared for emergencies and travel with a buddy.

Access Description

There are a few potential ways to access the Newfoundland Mountains: Option 1 is coming from the south via the I-15 Lakeside exit and crossing west alongside the railroad. Option 2 is coming in from the north via the Transcontinental Railroad Scenic Byway and coming on the trails down through Hogup. Option 3 is to approach by crossing the Salt Flats coming from Bonneville/Wendover (no trails, just open salt flats). Once in the Newfoundland Mountains, this road can be accessed from the southern end of either the West or East road.
