Trail Overview
This is classified as an "improved dirt road" in Susquehannock State Forest, so expect primarily gravel and packed dirt that, in ideal conditions, will be passable by all vehicles. The trail is southwest of Cherry Springs State Park. This particular trail is not legal for SxS, ATV, etc, at either end, but parts in the center have legal trails for those vehicles that cross it. Be on the lookout for this traffic here.. It features 2 great vistas, and the northernmost one is very nice with a pullout and picnic table. This trail is located in the northern part of the forest in is accessible from scenic US 6, a short drive from the PA Lumber Museum. It is north of Cherry Springs State Park, and it has dark skies. There is one dispersed motorized campsite and one ATV campsite along this trail that both require Reserve America reservations. The trail ends in Lyman Run State Park, which is a focal point for ATV riding in Susquehannock State Forest, with connections to the Susquehannock ATV Trail here, which in turn connects to the Northcentral Regional ATV trail system.
Difficulty
Other than a temporary obstacle from weather, this trail should not even require high clearance. During the winter, any state forest road can become dangerous if there is snow and ice on the ground; otherwise, this is an easy cruise through the forest.
History
The trail itself likely was established through the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. There were 10 CCC camps in Susquehannock State Forest during that period, and many of the current forest roads were built at that time.
