Trail Overview

At just under 5 miles, Poe Paddy Drive passes two beautiful vistas on its way from Pine Swamp Road to Poe Paddy State Park. This road can be broken into two sections as a passenger car can be driven most of the way including to the vistas. Once you pass the second vista, approximately 3.5 mi from Pine Swamp Road, the road changes, and a vehicle with higher clearance is required. As you start descending, the road turns rocky with occasional washes. Two switchbacks later and you arrive at the campground at Poe Paddy State Park.

Bridge was open but construction sign left behind says it closes next week, unsure if that’s true. The Eastern portion was surprisingly rocky.

Stock Tacoma TRD Pro manual transmission. I went up the rocky east side starting from the camp ground. I aired down, and stayed in 4-low through the steep climbing portion. It wasn’t hard, but there are def a few spots where you need to pick a good line (if you’re a stock 4x4). Then after the look outs for a bit… we went back down the same side. Down was obviously easier than up. I would do this trail again. It was short and fun.

Active bridge work continues on the West End of the trail. However you can get access to the East end through Poe Paddy Campground. The trail surface is effected be recent rains but passable with a decent rig. They are also regradeing and packing Pine Swamp road. I would expect them to be completed with the bridge work by the fall. The fact that the bridge is out and causing the out and back from the camp ground as the only option you will have little traffic on this trail which was evident today.

The west entrance had a sign posted about bridge work and the road being closed. We were able to get up to the view from the east end but it was really rocky and rusted from all of the rain. Definitely need something with higher clearance to get up from that side.

It was open. No signs of any construction as previously reported. Amazing overlook. The Eastern side of trail was rougher, definitely need a higher clearance vehicle. we were on Dual Sport Motorcycles.

If you are starting from Pine Swamp Rd it is probably a level 1 and there are two very nice vistas, but if you are starting from the campground like we did it is more of a level 4 with some big rocky sections and some pretty deep washouts. Overall a pretty fun trail.

turning off pine swamp Rd, poe paddy drive is nicely maintained gravel and can be accessed in a car to get to the vistas. once you get to the unmaintained section things get rocky and washed out. as the driveable portion of the trail weathers the rating might want to go up to a 3 since many 12"+ rocks and washouts. there is a particularly bad washout near the bottom that is 18-24" deep. high clearance 4x4 is a must and low range is encouraged.

most of poe paddy drive is maintained gravel that leads to some really nice vistas. the last portion is steep and has 12-18" rocks and some washouts as it leads down to poe paddy State Park.
