Trail Overview
Huckleberry Road begins off Benner Run Road; this section, mapped, joins the two main trails. The trail is a typical graded gravel road that is an in-and-out type of trail within the Moshannon State Forest. The beginning portions of Benner Run Road are a wonderful Scenic area with a small parking space. It is a fast-flowing brook with some benches set back in the woods. The forest has pines and big timber providing an abundance of nourishment for the local wildlife. There is a walking trail directly from this trail. The trail is easily accessible during the warm summer months, but is more difficult to traverse in the winter months due to snow and ice, and no winter maintenance.
History
Trail History is a 19th to early 20th century logging trail. Massive fires destroyed much of the forest and its organic soil, leaving a rocky landscape covered in ferns and huckleberries, hence the name. A beautiful stream and pond are a part of Black Moshannon Creek Watershed, which flows through sphagnum moss and plant tannins, creating a wonderful aesthetic look.
