Trail Overview

Dark Hollow Trail offers a scenic, easy-going off-road route through the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds, making it perfect for beginners and scenic cruisers alike. Running for approximately 12 miles from the Quehanna Highway down to Route 120 near Sinnemahoning, this trail follows a peaceful mountain stream and features a gradual elevation change of over 1,400 feet. The trail winds through dense forest canopies within the Elk State Forest, offering exceptional views of the surrounding valleys, particularly during the vibrant autumn foliage season. Although any standard vehicle can navigate this easy unpaved route, drivers must note the four-ton weight limit posted along the trail. The surface is primarily well-maintained dirt and gravel, requiring no special off-road modifications under normal conditions. The trail ranges in elevation from a high of around 2,200 feet down to 778 feet near its northern terminus, making for an enjoyable descent when traveled from south to north. While the route is highly accessible from spring through autumn, winter travel is not recommended due to unmaintained snow and ice accumulation. Nearby attractions, including the scenic Table Falls and other outdoor recreation areas, make this route an excellent starting point or connector for a full day of exploring the rugged public lands of north-central Pennsylvania.

There’s really no difficulty to this trail. To the point of stopping turning around and finding another trail. However there were a few side trails to take on the southern end that offered more mud and ruts.
