Trail Overview
Camp Road is an in-and-out trail that is a typical state forest graded gravel road within Rothrock State Forest. It encompasses Penn Roosevelt State Park, with multiple hiking trails for walking and mountain biking (Oven Baked Trail, Mid-state Trail, and Broad Mountain West Loop Trail). There is a nice pond, plenty of parking space with Picnic areas and Pavilions, Restrooms, and a tenting area. The trail is surrounded by plenty of wildlife and an abundance of nutrition for wildlife due to the oak trees in the area. The trail is easily traveled in the summer months but may become more difficult in winter due to snow and ice.
History
Camp Road in Rothrock State Forest was primarily constructed during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to provide access, fire protection, and recreational development. The area grew with interest in the public forest that had installed picnic areas and cabins. Today, the road is a popular access point for hiking, mountain biking, and visiting scenic vistas like Jo Hays Vista. Also too note is the wonderful Penn Roosevelt State Park, which was a hub for CCC.
