Trail Overview
Boone Road is primarily a graded gravel road from the northern start point south to the intersection with Stoney Run Road. From Stoney Run Road south, it is a 3-mile out-and-back ungraded dirt trail that ends at the State Forest boundary. It is an easy ride in the summer months; however, there is no winter maintenance. During times of rain, snow, and ice, the road can become rutted and harder to travel on. Rock Run Road is within Sproul State Forest. There are numerous spots to stop along this road and enjoy the foliage and possible wildlife. There are a few campsites in this part of Sproul State Forest to choose from. This region of Pennsylvania is a great place to explore during the fall when the leaves are changing color, and the full beauty of the State Forest is on display.
Difficulty
Boone Road is primarily a graded gravel road for the northern half and an ungraded dirt trail for the southern half. It is the southern part of the trail that is driving the trail rating. It has to be a higher rating for this section. It is a rutted and muddy ride in the summer months; however, there is no maintenance, which means you may need a chainsaw. During times of rain, snow, and ice, the road will become heavily rutted and extremely hard to travel on. There are areas of deep rutting, heavy mud, and standing water up to 18".
