Trail Overview

Head back in time as you travel through the abandoned town of San Toy. You will start by driving down a gravel road that will take you past old foundations to buildings that once stood there during coal mining times. After traveling down the gravel road, you will come across a covered bridge. You'll drive through the bridge and come out to a flagpole in the middle of the road with the old jailhouse off to the right. As you go down the narrow trail past the jailhouse, you will come upon many rutted mud holes. You will finish the trail off by having to turn around before hitting deeper mud holes and turning into private property.

Difficulty

The trail is easy for the most part but there are some very deep ruts and at the end, the trail would be rated a 10 due to the bottomless pits.

Gravel/dirt road with a couple mud holes near the end. Dead ends into private property. Not a technical trail at all. Some of my group had stock SUV’s on 20” street tires. They all made it through the mud fine. Very scenic if you want to sight see.

This has to be the best trail in Wayne National Forest that ive seen so far!!!..The main part is a gravel road...but when you get back in there before the loop...OMG!!!! You better be lifted to the sky, have GREAT tires and diff locks......Its a muddy mess in some spots and you can EASILY get into trouble. We turned around at one point because one of the mud holes (not pictured) looked as if it could swallow up my lifted power wagon with 35's!!!! lots of low hanging branches and downed trees, too. This ones is worth the effort but be careful with the mud holes!!!! spotty cell reception... so a GOOD CB and or ham radio is a must!!!

Almost made it all the way through. My truck is only 2wd and I’ve done the trail before (barely) but it has gotten slightly worse and I had to turn around about 3/4 of the way through due to a massive muddy pit where there was no way to make it through. I would say any 4wd vehicle could make it through. Probably without any kind of good off-road tire.

few mud holes, nothing too deep, stock height 4runner with stock size wildpeak tires. no issues until we came up on a tree down over the road about 2/3 down the trail, no saw so I had to turn around. Fun road with lots of places to explore

Was a great time brought a fue Cherokees out there and didn’t have a problem holes get big once you get to back but definitely favorite trail so far plenty of pull offs and old closed roads to check out along with the old town brought my kids along and they loved it great views

Nice, quiet in-and-out road near historic town of San Toy. Lots of potholes with a couple larger mud holes that have grown since I was there a year prior.

Fun little drive. Nice covered bridge to start the route. Some mud puddles along the way that you get to drive through twice as the road ends in the woods. It did look like you could continue down a more difficult part of the trail but it is listed as private property and I wouldn't recommend it.

I was sleeping on this trail till the very last hook. Out of 6 mud holes I got stuck in 5. trail dead ends unless you are on a UTV etc etc. got to the end and had to turn around and got stuck in a 5 foot mud pit. that coated my tires forsaking me to get stuck in every pit on the way out. very tight “bypasses” to some of the mud holes. I have a 15 JKU with 35s and 3.5 inch lift. pulled line for about an hour or two just trying to get back out. mud pits don’t look deep but all the surrounding surface is also mud.

Sunny day in the high 60’s. Great day for driving this trail. Leaves are just starting to turn color. The trail was mostly dry with some places holding water and mud. There was a downed tree near the end of the trail where the deepest and most challenging mud pits are. I walked past the tree to see what lay beyond. There are also many side trails that looked interesting that aren’t represented on the map. If I wasn’t alone I would’ve explored them. But they were narrow and I wasn’t sure if there was an easy turn around or if I’d need to back out once I got in a ways.

Mostly dry, has some easy-to-handle mud holes left. Nothing crazy except those big deep holes near the end of the trail.

trail is open and in good condition despite being a rainy day. there were two spots with large down trees narrow vehicles can get around easily. Many holes towards end of trail giving the opportunity to play in some mud.
