Trail Overview

Big Hollow Road is an out-and-back off-road trail that begins at the base of Prospect Mountain in Lake George. The route starts by passing through two tunnels beneath the Adirondack Northway (I-87). After emerging on the other side, a short stretch runs alongside the highway before the trail begins a steady ascent up the backside of the mountain. Along the way, you'll follow a scenic gorge, with a flowing stream and several small waterfalls providing a great backdrop. The trail is primarily composed of rocky terrain and is best suited for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. While there are no overly technical sections, there is a stream crossing near the top that requires careful tire placement to navigate safely. Conditions near the summit can become muddy, particularly after heavy rainfall. At the top, you'll find a turnaround area that makes a perfect spot to stop for lunch or take in the surroundings. The return trip follows the same path down, offering another chance to enjoy the natural features along the way. Overall, the trail takes about an hour round trip, making it a great short outing for anyone exploring the Lake George area.

First time off-roading, definitely tricky, had to reverse down got too scared, don’t know why this is rated as easy, would give it a 5 or 6 easily.

Trail was good lots of rocks and down trees removed all the down trees and once you get to the water crossing if you take the left side instead of the normal trail side be prepared to deal with deep mud holes. Other than that it took about 2 hours in total fun trail and challenging but it’s well worth the ride.

Good trail, should probably be rated a 4 or 5 though. Pretty steep and rocky, with no real places to turn around. Keep that in mind, as you’d have to reverse down if you wanted to turn around. Fun, good views, and just us.

A few muddy areas but didn’t need 4low or lockers. Always a nice trail. Just wish you could make it up to Prospect Mountain.

No issues in a stock Gladiator Rubicon. It got squishy at the top. You’re can’t make it to Prospect Mtn from this trail. The return trip was an easy day compared to the trip up.

A little muddy, I seen some people said they went to the top of the mountain but I stopped where the app ends the trail. There were also signs saying restricted area towards the end

I have a stock 2023 4runner off road premium an it was a rutted trail with big rocks it was honestly a fun trail but id say it was a moderate rating. And if you continue past the technical end of the trail it becomes even steeper an rocky and is easily an advanced trail an takes you to the top of the mountain. But overall a very fun trail

Sheer ice going up the hill. Saw where two 4x4 vehicles had to turn back. We got to a point where my tracks lost all traction and began sliding backwards. Both brakes applied did not slow backwards descent, so I floored it and gained traction just as we were about to head over the bank. Very unnerving…best to wait until all the ice is gone!
