Trail Overview

This rough and rocky cliff road has numerous spurs accessing the mine sites around historic Chloride City requires 4x4 and high clearance. That said, it is only a moderately challenging trail. It also has numerous dispersed camping sites that look out over Death Valley below. Be snake aware and keep an eye out for the Panamint Rattlesnake that is common here. It is said that the original Chloride Cliff Mine was discovered by August J. Franklin in 1871 when picked up a rock to crown a rattlesnake and found silver ore. There is a strong Verizon signal on the Chloride Cliffs.

Running the trail loop clockwise, the beginning is pretty easy for any 4x4. There is a section just before the peak where the dirt trail turns into a rock trail. It isn't too difficult. Just put it in 4L and take it slow. I had 1 spot where a took a bad line and needed to reset. After that, the decent is a little steep and has some ruts. No issues here, just steady and slow in 4L.

The trail isn’t technically difficult, but the part that bumps out from the Chloride Cliffs Road route has some steep, narrow shelf road that makes you pay attention.
