Trail Overview

The Oak Hill School FSR 3677 and 3677A are two trails that together form a fun and thrilling track through the Poplar Bluff sector of Mark Twain National Forest. The trail features medium-depth muddy water collection spots, tight trees, off-camber ruts, and mild rock and ledges poking through here and there. The hardest obstacle is at the middle point, where you traverse a triple mud rut section amongst tight trees, that leans off camber back and forth and tests extended suspension flex when getting in and out and in between ruts. To get turned around you will most likely have to find a spot worth backing into, and doing a multi-point turnaround.

Difficulty

A fun thrilling trail if you don't mind pinstripes, the trees are very tight, and this is backed by muddy water collection spots, deep off-camber ruts, and trees fallen across the trail, all on a dirt-based trail. Be prepared to reverse into a small open space you can spin around to head out.

History

The fire lookout tower was constructed as a New Deal project in 1941, potentially by the CCC. It is in reasonably good condition though it is no longer in use and the initial stair has been removed for safety reasons. Sourced from Livingnewdeal.org

Fairly muddy and uneven at the time of my drive. Some logs down but there’s enough space to get around them without concern. I turned around where the road T-s. Fun little drive!

Most of this road is gravel with a few little mud holes. But, the last few hundred yards gets a little tight with softer mud holes and large ruts.
