Trail Overview

This is a short gravel road. It is not maintained like it used to be, due to the obstruction now located at the end of the track. While the map shows you can travel through to Highway 32, due to the massive sinkhole, it is a dead end. This short little drive has a must-see sinkhole. Doe Run Minerals has several mines in the area, which may have formed the sinkhole if it didn't form naturally. This road has a significant history as it traces the original path of the Hildebrand Route of the Trail of Tears. During the winter of 1838-39, Peter Hildebrand directed a large detachment of Cherokee through the Ozarks. Use caution when around the sinkhole. It is still unsettled and becoming larger, and the road is blocked off by concrete barriers; after parking, use extreme caution when approaching. The sink hole was around 70 feet deep at the time of recording.
