Trail Overview

West Nurnberg Road offers a scenic drive through the Manistee National Forest on a well-maintained two-lane gravel road with plenty of room for passing. The views along the entire route are outstanding, and there are several opportunities to branch off onto two-track trails like Trail 5346, FS 5729, or FS 8039, which provide small views of the Big Sable River for a bit more adventure. The road eventually leads to the trailhead for the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area, where you'll find a turnaround with vaulted toilets, parking, trash cans, and picnic tables, making it a convenient and comfortable starting point for exploring the dunes. As you explore these routes, it's important to follow Tread Lightly and Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the forest for future visitors. Stay on designated trails, avoid driving through sensitive or waterlogged areas when possible, and pack out everything you bring in. Respect wildlife, minimize your impact, and leave the area better than you found it so these beautiful landscapes remain wild and accessible for years to come.

History

Designated by Congress in 1987, the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area protects about 3,500 acres of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline within the Huron-Manistee National Forests. Its towering dunes--some 4,000 years old and rising up to 140 feet--stand as a testament to both natural beauty and resilience. Once heavily logged and damaged by 19th-century fires, the area has since recovered, with maple, oak, pine, and hemlock forests returning to a more natural state. Originally home to the Anishinaabe people, this land is now preserved under the Wilderness Act as a raw, largely untouched landscape. As one of only two federal wilderness areas in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, it provides vital habitat for endangered species like the piping plover and Pitcher's thistle, while offering visitors a rare glimpse of the Great Lakes in their most wild and unspoiled form.
