Trail Overview
U.P. 419/Juniper Trail - Part 1 is an easy-going, scenic point-to-point off-road route perfect for beginners, families, and riders looking for a relaxed tour through Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. Spanning approximately 8.7 miles from near Wetmore to Shingleton, this trail serves as an excellent connector that transitions from U.P. 419 to Juniper Trail and ultimately onto the Coalwood ORV Rail Trail. The route is exceptionally flat, with a minimal elevation gain of around 90 feet, making it accessible to a wide variety of vehicles, including high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, ATVs, and dirt bikes. Featuring a primary surface of dirt and sand, the trail is generally well-graded, though travelers should be prepared for occasional patches of soft sand, minor water pooling, or mud depending on recent weather.
Starting just east of Federal Forest Highway 13 near Munising, the path winds eastward through dense northern forests before intersecting M-28 and M-94. The eastern terminus brings riders directly into the small town of Shingleton, which offers convenient options for gas, food, and local amenities, allowing for an easy pit stop before continuing. For those looking to cut their day short, the proximity to M-94 provides a quick asphalt escape route. For those continuing the adventure, this route seamlessly links into Part 2 of the trail system, where it connects with the historic Haywire Grade Rail Trail. Since the trail is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it is best ridden from late spring through autumn when the ground is clear of heavy winter snow.
