Trail Overview
Oil Pump Trail is a unique and scenic short out-and-back trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located just north of highway M-72, this trail is easily accessible. Starting from Rice Rd NW, you'll start on a sandy gravel road that leads into the thicker section of the forest. As you twist around through this beautiful section of woods, you'll cross over the Grand Traverse to Leetsville MCCCT 0.3 miles into the trail. Be sure to take it the wonderful nature this track has to offer. The end of the trail finishes with a loop around an oil well site. Fun fact: Michigan has over 50,000 oil & gas extraction wells drilled since 1925, and ranks 18th in the U.S. for crude oil production. Please TREAD LIGHTLY so future generations can enjoy these public spaces. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle, with limited places to pass. This is not a difficult trail, but it contains a lot of fun and beauty, and gives access to other great trails nearby. Regardless of the conditions or length of this trail, it's a fantastic route to explore! As always, again, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails!
