History

The Net River's history is defined by its clear, dark waters and unique string-of-pearls topography, featuring a series of small lakes connected by rapids. Its name, from the Ojibwa word nett meaning "clear," highlights its historical role as a waterway cleared by indigenous people and early settlers for transportation. In the late 19th century, it also served as a log sorting and transport route, with the Paint Dam built by the Menominee Boom Co. in 1865 near its mouth. Key historical points: Native American and Early Settler Use: The river was kept clear of logjams, indicating its use as a route for travel and transport by indigenous people and early settlers. River Name Origin: The river's name comes from the Ojibwa word "nett," meaning clear, referring to its dark water and the efforts to keep its channel clear. Paint Dam: A significant historical landmark on the river is the Paint Dam, built in 1865 by the Menominee Boom Co. for sorting logs during the lumbering era. Lumbering and Transport: The river's morphology - a series of lakes connected by short rapids - allowed for canoe travel, with only the rapids requiring portaging, making it a potential route for logging and transportation. Fishing: The lower sections of the river were known for good catches of bass, and the area around the mouth of the Net River was a good spot for bass and trout fishing.
