Trail Overview
Kolke Creek Trail is an easy route well suited for high-clearance SUVs, stock 4x4s, and other off-road vehicles looking for a relaxed drive through Northern Michigan's forest landscape. Located within the Gaylord Forest Management Unit, this single-lane gravel, dirt, and sand trail winds through a mix of pine stands and hardwood forest, offering frequent opportunities to spot local wildlife while connecting to the area's larger trail network. Although much of the route is straightforward, drivers should be prepared for stretches of soft sand and a few shallow water holes that can become more challenging after wet weather. Several sections widen enough to allow passing, making it easier to share the trail with oncoming traffic.
The trail can be traveled in either direction and terminates at Mount Frederic Road, making it a flexible option for exploring nearby routes or planning a longer day on the trail system. Elevation changes are minimal, and the combination of natural forest scenery and varied road surfaces creates an enjoyable drive without requiring advanced technical driving skills in normal conditions. Seasonal weather can affect trail conditions, particularly in spring and after heavy rain, so expect sand to become looser and water crossings to deepen. As with all routes in the Gaylord Forest Management Unit, stay on designated trails, respect posted regulations, and practice Tread Lightly principles to help preserve access and protect the surrounding environment.
