Trail Overview
Kalkaska ORV South is a must-ride trail in the state of Michigan. While the terrain stays fairly consistent throughout, it still offers a fun and engaging experience for all types of riders. You'll encounter a mix of deep sand, harder-packed soil, and some technical sections with exposed roots and tricky elevation changes. These features keep the ride interesting without becoming overwhelming. One of the biggest draws of Kalkaska South is the sheer volume of connecting trails--making it easy to spend an entire day riding without getting bored. Whether you're out for a quick loop or looking to explore for hours, this area has plenty to offer.
Difficulty
There's nothing on this trail that a beginner can't safely ride over, but there are a few challenges to be aware of. Some sections have deep sand, which can be difficult for newer riders to navigate. During the summer, vegetation often becomes thick and overgrown, making the trail harder to see and increasing the chance of getting hit by low branches. When conditions are dry, dust can become very heavy, obscuring visibility and making it harder to spot other riders. The overall pace of the trail is fairly fast, which can increase the risk of collisions--especially on busy days. That said, with caution and awareness, this trail remains accessible for beginners.
