History
The Goudreau trail is named after the family that resided in/around the St. Ignace and Seul Choix Point area. It is deeply intertwined with the commercial fishing and maritime history of the Upper Peninsula, rather than a single established "trail" pathway. The family was involved in early commercial fisheries, maritime commerce, and historic artifact preservation in the region. Key historical elements related to the Goudreau family include: Amable Goudreau (Epoufette): In 1859, Amable Goudreau established a commercial fishing business in Epoufette. By 1875, this operation was a thriving fishery involving commercial nets and, at times, descendants continued this trade for over a century. George Goudreau and the Seul Choix Anchor: In the early 1930s, George Goudreau and his brother Martin discovered a century-old anchor while fishing in Seul Choix Bay. This 2,000-pound anchor was later donated by the George Goudreau estate to the Schoolcraft County Historical Society and is displayed at Pioneer Park. "Aunt Jane" Goudreau (St. Ignace): Genevieve "Aunt Jane" (Derusha) Goudreau (1865-1958) was a prominent St. Ignace resident who married Capt. Louis Goudreau in 1883. She lived on Beaver Island, in Epoufette, and finally in St. Ignace, where she was known for preserving local history, collecting artifacts, and operating a tourist home. Ekdahl-Goudreau Site: An archaeological site near Seul Choix Point, known as the Ekdahl-Goudreau Site, was discovered in 1962 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, containing artifacts from the Late Woodland period.
