Trail Overview

Gorge Cutout is a state owned/ locally maintained, Level-2/ Level-3 forest access route with a surface composition of gravel, sand, dirt, and native material that is prone to seasonal conditions and "sugar sand" spots as it traverses through the dense coniferous & hardwood forest of the Baraga Plains.

Gravel, dirt, sand route typically unmaintained after rain or snow that may give rise to water crossings under 12 inches and obstacles such as tree/ tree branches and potential overflow from the Silver River and Dirkman Lake.

History

Gorge Cutout, is a historic and rustic county-maintained gravel and native-sand route providing access to the vast Baraga Plains area, an expansive outwash plain shaped by logging history, wildlife management, and early Upper Peninsula transit.
