Trail Overview
FS4504 is a scenic and easy-going two-track that winds through a corridor of tall pine trees in the northern Michigan forest. The trail surface consists primarily of smooth, hard-packed dirt with grassy sections running between the tire tracks, creating a comfortable and relaxing drive suitable for a variety of off-road vehicles. The route remains wide and relatively flat throughout, with gentle curves and no significant elevation changes or technical obstacles.
About halfway through the trail, the corridor narrows considerably as vegetation encroaches closer to the route. Low-hanging branches and tighter tree cover create a more enclosed feel and may result in light pinstriping on wider vehicles. While the trail remains passable for full-size 4x4s, drivers should use caution in the narrower sections and be prepared for limited clearance from surrounding vegetation.
One of the most unique aspects of this trail is its location within the protected breeding habitat of the endangered Kirtland's Warbler, a small migratory songbird found primarily in young jack pine ecosystems of northern Michigan. To protect this sensitive habitat, FS4504 is seasonally closed from May 1 through July 15 during the nesting and breeding season. Outside of the closure period, the trail offers a peaceful forest experience with opportunities to appreciate the area's natural beauty and wildlife habitat.
Along the route, there is a popular dispersed camping area featuring two established campsites, one on each side of the trail. Both sites are situated in large grassy clearings and include man-made rock fire pits, providing a convenient option for those looking to spend a night in the forest. Campers should always verify current regulations and practice Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the area.
This route is best suited for those seeking a leisurely forest drive through a unique conservation area while exploring the surrounding network of forest roads and two-tracks.
