Trail Overview
Deadman Cutover is an easy scenic route well suited for high-clearance stock 4WD vehicles and anyone looking to explore Northern Michigan's extensive forest trail network. This single-lane dirt, gravel, and sand two-track winds through the Traverse City Forest Management Unit, featuring a narrow, twisting corridor with occasional stretches of soft sand and scattered mud holes that can become more challenging after wet weather. While the trail is primarily one vehicle wide, there are periodic wider sections that allow oncoming traffic to pass safely. The route travels through a mix of pine forest and mature hardwoods, creating excellent opportunities to spot local wildlife while enjoying a quiet backcountry drive.
The trail connects with several nearby routes, making it a great option for building a longer day of exploring the surrounding trail system before ending at County Road 612. Elevation changes are minimal, and the generally smooth surface makes for a relaxed ride, though drivers should remain alert for changing trail conditions, seasonal moisture, and loose sand.
