Trail Overview
Copper County State Forest Road is a non-DNR road under private ownership. The surface consists of dirt, sand, and native material, and the overall condition is considered fair. Since it is not a DNR road, ORV use is subject to local government laws. The road remains open under the current closure criteria. This route serves as an off-road spur of Lake Linden–Gay Road. It is frequently used by snowmobiles during the winter months and permits ORV use during the off-season.
Difficulty
Dirt and sand route, typically unmaintained after rain or snow. You may encounter shallow water crossings and obstacles under 12” on the trail, including small ledges. Route is typically one to two vehicles in width.
History
The town of Gay, Michigan, was named for Joseph E. Gay, a founder of mining companies, and its history centers on copper mining and lumbering in the Keweenaw Peninsula, rather than being a place of gay historical significance. The town's history is characterized by the "boom and bust" cycle of the copper mills, which brought people for mining and processing copper, only to leave after the mills closed in the early 1930s.
