Trail Overview

Cliff Falls Lasso is a state owned/ locally maintained, Level-2, "There-and-back" forest access route with a surface composition of sand, dirt, and native material (ex: leaves, pine needles, pine cones, sticks, branches). This route offers access to a labyrinth of forested "Two-Tracks" and footpaths within the deep wilderness of the Cliff River & Cliff Lake.

Difficulty

Sand, dirt, gravel, and grass route is typically unmaintained after rain or snow, which may give rise to water crossings >12” and obstacles such as tree/ tree branches.

History

Big Bay, Michigan, is a historic, former sawmill town located on the shores of Lake Superior in Marquette County. The nearby Cliff River is a 6.8-mile tributary draining through the Huron Mountain wilderness into Mountain Lake. The area is celebrated for its lumber industry, copper prospecting roots, and 1950s Hollywood history

Trail was fun and offered wonderful access to the Forty Foot Falls. We started the loop from the East portion to get to the falls. There is a rather large washout on the trail just past the waterfall (to the North). You encounter it after going down the hill. The washout itself is going uphill (if you take the trail from the East/right first). I got through it with my Ford Ranger on 32in K03 tires using 4x4 and my rear locker. My friend got through it with his lifted '04 Cadillac Escalade with 4x4 and open diffs. I'd recommend a spotter if trying to head North of the falls in anything larger than a side-by-side.

Recent storms caused some erosions just past the falls (if you stayed right at the split). A side by side could pass it.
