Difficulty

Dirt, gravel, sand, grass, and a rooted path, typically unmaintained after rain or snow, may give rise to shallow water crossings and obstacles under 12 inches on the trail, including small ledges. This route is a narrow "Two-Track" that is one vehicle in width or less.

History

Dollar Settlement is a small, unincorporated area along Lake Superior between Brimley and Paradise, named after Joseph "Joe" Dollar. Joe Dollar lived in a log cabin and famously piloted a sailboat to deliver mail and supplies to local residents in the area. It is often associated with an abandoned railroad car intended for a restaurant. This area is best known for the Pendills Creek National Fish Hatchery, which has been vital for Lake Superior's ecosystem since 1951. The facility was established to produce native lake trout for Great Lakes restoration, with the area surrounding it being a critical site for treaty rights, notably the 1971 case where Chippewa Indian community members asserted fishing rights in Pendills Bay.
