History

Established on May 2, 1933, in the Hiawatha National Forest near Raco, Michigan, Camp Raco (Company 667) was the first Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp in the Upper Peninsula. Over 200 young men from Detroit and Hamtramck worked on reforestation, fire suppression, and building infrastructure. It later became a WWII German POW camp. Key Historical Details: Establishment: Known initially as "Lone Pine Camp" (Camp Raco F-5), it was founded as part of FDR’s New Deal to employ young men during the Depression. CCC Projects: Workers built roads, planted trees, improved streams, and established campgrounds across a 151,140-acre fire protection area. World War II Era: By 1942, it was the only operating CCC camp in the district before being converted into a prisoner-of-war camp, housing over 250 German soldiers. Legacy: The camp closed after the war, and most buildings were removed. Today, only a chimney and some foundations remain in the Hiawatha National Forest near Michigan Route 28 and Brimley.
