Trail Overview

Caledonia Road offers a scenic and moderately challenging point-to-point offroad route near Mass City, Michigan, perfect for drivers seeking a classic Upper Peninsula forest adventure with a touch of mining history. Spanning approximately 4.9 miles, this unmaintained trail cuts through dense woodland terrain, transitioning from gravel to dirt with some muddy sections. Throughout the drive, travelers will experience a steady elevation climb and descent, ranging from about 800 feet to nearly 1,290 feet, culminating in one long, steep hill that features loose rock and dirt. The path is primarily a single lane wide, making it a tight squeeze where dense brush routinely brushes against vehicles. Drivers will encounter a shallow stream crossing that typically runs under 8 inches deep, though water levels can rise significantly after heavy rainfall. Due to the narrow clearance and unmaintained nature of the road, full-sized rigs and campers are highly discouraged unless operators are comfortable with trail scratches and tight maneuvers. The route skirts around historical sites, including the notable Caledonia Copper Mine, adding an educational backdrop to the rugged drive. The trail is rated a 3 out of 10, meaning it is accessible to most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles with a bit of driver care.
