Trail Overview

This is one of Michigan's ORV Routes that is open to all licensed vehicles and ORVs. It runs from Houghton to Greenland at roughly 40 miles in length, utilizing the old Copper Range Railroad grade. There are 2 trestles that have been removed, and these account for the only hills on the trail. Otherwise, the trail is pretty flat and generally well-maintained. The surface is generally gravel, but there is a stretch of sand near Twin Lakes and loose rock near each end. There are three old railroad trestles that cross the three branches of the firesteel River near the Southern end of the trail, these are famous for their view as they sit 200' above the valley below. This trail should not be driven after a snowfall as it is a groomed snowmobile trail in Winter. There are numerous businesses along the way to stop for gas, food, and recreation.

The trail that runs along the harbor and starts across from campground is easy until you have to cross over Old Mill road then it becomes 8/10 in complexity with huge loose rocks and pretty steep grade. Do not attempt if you're expecting a 2 out 10 trail and newer to dirt bikes.

An easy trail with mostly flat smooth to mildly bumpy surfaces with a mix of dirt, gravel, and sand. The hill decent and climb in Houghton at Old Mill road will be a challenge for less capable vehicles. This is where the trail earns a level 2 or 3 when deteriorated. I used 4LO mainly for speed control at this section. The rest of the trail can be done in 2WD. Highly recommend stopping at Krupp’s Mini Mart for pasties. They also have misc supplies, hardware, snacks, cold drinks, and additional cafe menu items. Enjoy the one lane Firesteel River train trestle crossing near Lake Mine. Expect visitors because it is easy to access from M38. There are additional pull offs between each bridge section.
