Trail Overview
Federal Forest Service Road 3622, also known as Avery South, is a federally owned, Level-2/ Level-3 forest road with a surface composition of dirt, sand, gravel, and native material. This route is currently open and in fair condition; it is not a DNR road (ORV use subject to local government regulations) and connects FS 3047 to FS 3018, FS 2605, FS 3041, South Ranger Road, FS 3578, FS 3579, FS 3369, FS 3681, and FS 3153. Difficulty
Dirt, gravel, sandy road, typically unmaintained after rain or snow, that may give rise to shallow water crossings and obstacles under 12 inches on the trail, including small ledges. This road is typically one to two vehicles in width.
History
Raco, Michigan, near Avery Lake, originated in 1887 as a logging town named for the Richardson and Avery Company. It became significant in 1933 as the site of Camp Raco, Michigan’s first Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp. During WWII, the area served as a POW camp for 267 German prisoners and an airstrip.
